CONTRAVE vs. Belviq

Belviq is another weight loss medication that uses a different mechanism than that of CONTRAVE to boost weight loss results. Its active ingredient is lorcaserin hydrochloride hemihydrate, a serotonin 2C receptor agonist. It is believed to curb the negative effects of hunger and provide an improved sense of satiety, or the feeling of fullness.

The effects of the medication are intended to help individuals on a diet and exercise plan increase their ability to maintain dietary discipline. It is mainly intended for use by patients with comorbid conditions such as hypertension or type 2 diabetes, but can be used by patients who are medically obese as well.

Belviq comes with risks associated with long-term use, and it is generally used only to pull patients out of the category of obesity and to stave the risk of death in the face of deadly conditions like cardiovascular disease.

Conversely, CONTRAVE assists with long-term weight maintenance as well as accelerated weight loss. It also comes with low risk when combined with the help of a physician and a recommended diet and exercise plan.

CONTRAVE vs. Phentermine

Phentermine, like Belviq, is more well-suited for short-term, rapid weight loss. However, use of phentermine comes with very high risk.

It is a psychostimulant drug similar to amphetamine. When medications stimulate the brain in a way that affects the balance of chemicals, the appetite tends to lower. Phentermine’s chief use is as an appetite suppressant in conjunction with diet and exercise.

However, it is only effective for short-term use. The side effects of phentermine, similar to those of other amphetamines, put patients at too high of a risk for drug dependence and abuse when used long-term. Patients also tend to use the highest available dosages to take advantage of the available safety window, which puts them at greater risk for developing drug dependence.

CONTRAVE, however, does not work as an amphetamine does, which means it won’t put patients at high risk for drug abuse. It is also indicated for use as a weight maintainer provided use is supervised by a medical professional.

CONTRAVE vs. Qsymia

Qsymia is a chronic weight management medication like CONTRAVE. It uses a combination of weight loss ingredients as well to produce an effect that helps obese and morbidly obese people control their appetites.

This medication uses phentermine as one of its active ingredients. It works alongside topiramate, an anticonvulsant, to suppress the appetite.

But CONTRAVE does more than just suppress your appetite. It keeps your cravings at bay, too, by regulating neurotransmitters in the mesolimbic reward system that spark the hunger for specific foods. Over time, your cravings disappear naturally as your brain adjusts to the new rewards of a healthy diet and exercise.
